Our History

Harper Green School has been a proud part of the Farnworth community for almost 100 years. Over the decades, it has grown into much more than just a school – it has become a place where students, staff and families come together to support one another, celebrate success and create lasting memories.

Our 'We Are Harper' spirit is at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to offer a wealth of opportunities, supported by excellent facilities and inspiring learning environments that help every young person flourish – whether in the classroom, through sport, the arts or personal development. It is this strong sense of belonging that makes Harper Green such a special place to learn and grow, where everyone is welcomed, valued and encouraged to achieve their very best.

As we approach our centenary, we are proud of our rich heritage and excited for the future. While much has changed since our doors first opened, our commitment to providing an exceptional education and helping every student succeed has remained the same.

Our Story

Originally established as Farnworth Central School, Harper Green began as a small school serving the local community. Over the years, it has grown significantly, expanding its buildings, facilities and curriculum to meet the changing needs of generations of young people.

As the school evolved, so too did its identity. From its early years as a central school to becoming the thriving secondary school it is today, Harper Green has continually adapted while remaining true to its core purpose – providing an excellent education in a caring, supportive environment.

Throughout its history, the school has welcomed inspiring leaders, dedicated staff and thousands of students, all of whom have played an important part in shaping the Harper Green community. Each generation has contributed to the school's story, helping to build the strong values and sense of belonging that continue to define us today.

In recent years, Harper Green has undergone significant investment following its transition into Leverhulme Church of England and Community Trust. Modern learning environments, specialist facilities and enhanced resources have transformed the campus, creating inspiring spaces where students can thrive academically, creatively and personally.

Today, Harper Green combines the character and traditions of its rich history with a forward-thinking approach to education. We continue to embrace innovation, broaden opportunities and ensure every student is supported to achieve their full potential.

As we look towards our centenary, we remain proud of our past while looking confidently to the future. We will continue to build on our strong foundations, invest in our school community and inspire generations of young people to grow, succeed and make a positive difference in the world.
